Este artículo examina la dimensión política del concepto de mesianismo. Se sostiene que el recurso a este concepto en ciertos filósofos contemporáneos, sobre todo Agamben, es deudor de las tesis de Schmitt, Benjamin y Taubes sobre el pensamiento paulino. Desde estas premisas, se examina la relevancia filosófico-política del mesianismo a partir de su cuestionamiento de todo nomos, justificando su carácter impolítico. El mesianismo impolítico es la antítesis de la teología política.

En el ámbito de la lógica matemática existe un problema sobre la relación lógica entre dos versiones débiles del Axioma de elección (AE) que no se ha podido resolver desde el año 2000 (aproximadamente). Tales versiones están relacionadas con ultrafiltros no principales y con Propiedades Ramsey (Bernstein, Polarizada, Subretículo, Ramsey, Ordinales flotantes, etc). La primera versión débil del AE es la siguiente (A): “Existen ultrafiltros no principales sobre el conjunto de los números naturales (ℕ)”. Y la segunda versión débil del (...) AE es la siguiente (B): “Existen ultraflitros sobre ℕ”. Se sabe que A implica B, pero se desconoce si B implica A. Di Prisco y Henle conjeturan en los artículos ([1], [2]) que esto no ocurre, es decir, conjeturan que B no implica A, en otras palabras, conjeturan que A es más fuerte estrictamente que B, que A es independiente de B, pero esto no se ha podido demostrar todavía aunque se ha intentado hacer desde hace aproximadamente 21 años. In a recent paper, Berger and Nanay consider, and reject, three ways of addressing the phenomenon of unconscious perception within a naïve realist framework. Since these three approaches seem to exhaust the options open to naïve realists, and since there is said to be excellent evidence that perception of the same fundamental kind can occur, both consciously and unconsciously, this is seen to present a problem for the view. We take this opportunity to show that all three approaches considered remain (...) perfectly plausible ways of addressing unconscious perception within a naïve realist framework. So far from undermining the credibility of naïve realism, Berger and Nanay simply draw our attention to an important question to be considered by naïve realists in future work. Namely, which of the approaches considered is most likely to provide an accurate account of unconscious perception in each of its purported incarnations? (shrink)

Resumen: En la actualidad uno de los libros más usados para dar lógica elemental es el de Irving Copi y Carl Cohen (Introducción a la lógica, 2001), allí se presentan unas reglas para decidir la validez de los silogismos categóricos de forma estándar. Pero en tal texto ni en ninguno que nosotros conozcamos se ofrece una fundamentación de las mismas. Es decir, una demostración de que ellas son realmente una condición necesaria y suficiente de la validez de un silogismo categórico (...) de forma estándar, lo único que hemos leído es su motivación como condición necesaria. El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer una fundamentación de las mismas usando la noción de conjunto (o clase) y la técnica de diagramas de Venn, un concepto y una técnica que están expuestos en los principales textos de lógica elemental, incluyendo el referido anteriormente. -/- Abstract: Currently, one of the most widely used textbooks in elementary logic is the one by Irving Copi and Carl Cohen (Introduction to Logic, 2001). They offer rules for deciding the validity of standard categorical syllogisms. But neither that textbook, nor any other we know of, provides the foundations of these rules; that is to say, the demonstration that they are a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of a standard categorical syllogism. We have only found motivations for the necessary condition. The main goal of this work is to provide a foundation of these rules using the notion of set as well as Venn diagrams, a concept and a technique exposed in the main textbooks of logic, including the aforementioned. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es presentar el sistema lógico que resulta de extender, de una manera natural, a la Silogística con la Lógica proposicional, y demostrar que tal extensión se puede caracterizar como un sistema axiomático. Los axiomas que se utilizan son los de Jan Łukasiewicz , y la completitud de tal sistema de axiomas se prueba utilizando un método análogo al método del conjunto maximal consistente con testigos de Henkin, siguiendo algunas ideas que utiliza John Corcoran para (...) probar que su sistema de reglas de inferencia para la Silogística es completo. According to the brain drain argument, there are good reasons for states to limit the exit of their skilled workers (more specifically, healthcare workers), because of the negative impacts this type of migration has for other members of the community from which they migrate. Some theorists criticise this argument as illiberal, while others support it and ground a duty to stay of the skilled workers on rather vague concepts like patriotic virtue, or the legitimate expectations of their state and co-citizens. In this article, on the contrary, we suggest that the liberal conception of states’ legitimate political authority demands, and not just permits, that developing states from which migration of skilled workers occurs set up contractual mechanisms. These mechanisms will ensure that state-funded training in the health sector is provided against a commitment on the part of future professionals to reciprocate with their services for the benefits obtained. If one of the conditions for the state to maintain legitimate political authority is to provide basic services such as healthcare to its subjects (while respecting at the same time their autonomy and freedom), then this is what developing states affected by the brain drain ought to do. What we call the authority-based approach to the brain drain also helps to clarify the obligations that other states have not to interfere with these contractual mechanisms when they exist, and not to profit from their absence. Inspired by FIFA’s legal instruments of training compensation and solidarity mechanism for the transfer of players, we conclude by suggesting a plausible global policy to complement this authority-based approach. Digitalisation is attracting much scholarly attention at present. However, scholars often take its benefits for granted, overlooking the essential question: “Does digital technology make us better?” This paper aims to help fill this gap by examining digitalisation as a form of government (digitocracy) and the way it shapes a new kind of man: _animal digitalis_. I argue that the digitalised man is animal-like rather than machine-like. This man does not use efficient and cold machine-like language, but is rather emotionalised through (...) digital technology. If those who are ruled acted like machines, data would not be produced on a mass scale, and machine learning would stop learning. Digital man has animal features and is ruled by his brain’s reward system. We need to abandon this new form of government and the resulting man. To overcome digitalisation, we need a humanism that recovers the proper place of man over animals and artefacts, but maintains respect for the value of nature. (shrink)

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar una demostración de un teorema clásico sobre álgebras booleanas y ordenes parciales de relevancia actual en teoría de conjuntos, como por ejemplo, para aplicaciones del método de construcción de modelos llamado “forcing” (con álgebras booleanas completas o con órdenes parciales). El teorema que se prueba es el siguiente: “Todo orden parcial se puede extender a una única álgebra booleana completa (salvo isomorfismo)”. Donde extender significa “sumergir densamente”. Tal demostración se realiza utilizando cortaduras de (...) Dedekind siguiendo el texto “Set Theory” de Jech, y otras ideas propias del autor de este artículo. Adicionalmente, se formulan algunas versiones débiles del axioma de elección relacionadas con las álgebras booleanas, las cuales son también de gran importancia para la investigación en teoría de conjuntos y teoría de modelos, pues estas son poderosas técnicas de construcción de modelos, como por ejemplo, el teorema de compacidad (permite construir modelos no estándar, etc) y el teorema del ultrafiltro, que permite construir ultraproductos (pueden ser usados para investigar problemas de cardinales grandes, etc). Se presentan algunas referencias de problemas abiertos sobre el tema. -/- The objective of this paper is to present a demonstration of a classical theorem on boolean algebras and partial orders of current relevance in set theory, as for example, for applications of model construction method called forcing" (with boolean algebras complete or with partial orders). The theorem to be proved is as follows: Any partial order can be extended to a single complete boolean algebra (up to isomorphism)". Where to extend means embed densely". Such a demonstration is done using Dedekind's cuts following the text Set Theory" of Jech, and other ideas of the author of this article. In addition, some weak versions of the axiom of choice related to boolean algebras are formulated, which are also of great importance for the research in set theory and model theory, since this are powerful model construction techniques, such as the compactness theorem (allows the construction of non-standard models, etc.) and the ultralter theorem, which allows the construction of ultraproducts (can be used to investigate problems of large cardinals, etc). In this paper I propose a set-theoretical interpretation of the logical square of opposition, in the perspective opened by generalized quantifier theory. Generalized quantifiers allow us to account for the semantics of quantificational Noun Phrases, and of other natural language expressions, in a coherent and uniform way. I suggest that in the analysis of the meaning of Noun Phrases and Determiners the square of opposition may help representing some semantic features responsible to different logical properties of these expressions. El objetivo principal de este artículo es presentar la demostración directa del Teorema de compacidad de la Lógica de primer orden (Gama tiene un modelo si y sólo si cada subconjunto finito de Gama tiene un modelo) que se realiza utilizando el Método de construcción de modelos llamado "Ultraproductos" que, a su vez, usa "Ultrafiltros". Actualmente es más común demostrar el Teorema de compacidad como un corolario del Teorema de completitud de Gödel y usar el método de reducción al absurdo (...) para probarlo. Sin embargo, vale la pena estudiar también esta prueba directa que usa Ultraproductos porque dicha técnica tiene importantes aplicaciones en investigaciones contemporáneas de matemáticas, por ejemplo en la Teoría de conjuntos y en el Análisis. Al final del artículo se realiza un breve comentario sobre Compacidad, Ultraproductos, Cardinales grandes y Modelos no estándar. (shrink)

Ultrafilters are very important mathematical objects in mathematical research [6, 22, 23]. There are a wide variety of classical theorems in various branches of mathematics where ultrafilters are applied in their proof, and other classical theorems that deal directly with ultrafilters. The objective of this article is to contribute (in a divulgative way) to ultrafilter research by describing the demonstrations of some such theorems related (uniquely or in combination) to topology, Measure Theory, algebra, combinatorial infinite, set theory and first-order logic, (...) also formulating some updated open problems of set theory that refer to non-principal ultrafilters on N, the Mathias’s model and the Solovay’s model. -/- Resumen: Los ultrafiltros son objetos matemáticos muy importantes en la investigación matemática [6, 22, 23]. Existen una gran variedad de teoremas clásicos en diversas ramas de la matemática donde se aplican ultrafiltros en su demostración, y otros teoremas clásicos que tratan directamente sobre ultrafiltros. El objetivo de este artículo es contribuir (de una manera divulgativa) con la investigación sobre ultrafiltros describiendo las demostraciones de algunos de tales teoremas relacionados (de manera única o combinada) con topología, teoría de la medida, álgebra, combinatoria infinita, teoría de conjuntos y lógica de primer orden, formulando además algunos problemas abiertos actuales de la teoría de conjuntos que se refieren a ultrafiltros no principales sobre N, al Modelo de Mathias y al Modelo de Solovay. Para matemáticos interesados en problemas de fundamentos, lógico-matemáticos y filósofos de la matemática, el axioma de elección es centro obligado de reflexión, pues ha sido considerado esencial en el debate dentro de las posiciones consideradas clásicas en filosofía de la matemática (intuicionismo, formalismo, logicismo, platonismo), pero también ha tenido una presencia fundamental para el desarrollo de la matemática y metamatemática contemporánea. Desde una posición que privilegia el quehacer matemático, nos proponemos mostrar los aportes que ha tenido el axioma en varias (...) áreas fundamentales de la matemática, su aplicación en la lógica de primer orden, así como una breve descripción de las pruebas de consistencia relativa debidas a Gödel y Cohen, las cuales establecieron su independencia del sistema axiomático Zermelo-Fraenkel (ZF). Con todo lo anterior mostraremos cómo el quehacer matemático contemporáneo se adscribe al platonismo matemático en los términos de Bernays y Ferreirós. Revisaremos también los argumentos de Zermelo y Cantor para permitir el uso de asunciones en la matemática, los cuales se acercan a los planteamientos de la investigación científica y esbozan relaciones con la filosofía de la práctica matemática. Finalmente, justificamos el uso del axioma de elección en la contemporaneidad, abogando por unas relaciones de equidad entre la matemática y la filosofía, presentando además su plena vigencia, a través de la referencia a algunos problemas abiertos en la actualidad que vinculan el axioma de elección con la teoría de Ramsey. En este artículo se presentan dos demostraciones del teorema de interpolación: Una para la lógica proposicional y otra para la lógica de primer orden. Ambas se realizan en el contexto de la teoría de modelos. El teorema de interpolación afirma que si A y B son fórmulas, donde A no es una contradicción, B no es válida, y B es una consecuencia lógica de A, entonces existe una fórmula C que esta escrita en el lenguaje común al de A y (...) de B, tal que C es una consecuencia lógica de A y B es una consecuencia lógica de C. El teorema de interpolación fue demostrado por primera vez para la lógica de primer orden por William Craig en 1957, y desde entonces se ha investigado la posibilidad de generalizarlo o aplicarlo. Dicho teorema tiene generalizaciones o aplicaciones en teoría de la demostración, teoría de modelos abstracta, ciencias de la computación, lógica modal, lógica intuicionista, etc. Se presentan ejemplos de aplicaciones o generalizaciones de la propiedad de interpolación relacionados con lógicas infinitarias, cuantificadores generalizados, segundo orden, no clásicas, abstractas, etc. También se ofrecen referencias de problemas abiertos sobre interpolación en el contexto de la teoría de modelos abstracta. The objective of this document is to present three introductory notes on set theory: The first note presents an overview of this discipline from its origins to the present, in the second note some considerations are made about the evaluation of reasoning applying the first-order Logic and Löwenheim's theorems, Church Indecidibility, Completeness and Incompleteness of Gödel, it is known that the axiomatic theories of most commonly used sets are written in a specific first-order language, that is, they are developed within (...) the framework of first-order logic, so this note is relevant; and the third note refers to the presence of mathematical platonism in the axioms of ZFC and in the axioms of "complete ordered field", it is known that the last axioms mentioned characterize (except isomorphism) the real number system and are currently used to develop the real Analysis in the context of set theory. It is hoped that this article will be of pedagogical utility for students interested in set theory and in the philosophy of mathematics (that are beginning in the subject). (shrink)

El estudio de los "cardinales grandes" es uno de los principales temas de investigación de la teoría de conjuntos y de la teoría de modelos que ha contribuido con el desarrollo de dichas disciplinas. Existe una gran variedad de tales cardinales, por ejemplo cardinales inaccesibles, débilmente compactos, Ramsey, medibles, supercompactos, etc. Tres valiosos teoremas clásicos sobre cardinales medibles son los siguientes: (i) compacidad débil, (ii) Si κ es un cardinal medible, entonces κ es un cardinal inaccesible y existen κ cardinales (...) inaccesibles menores que κ , y (iii) Si existe un cardinal medible, entonces el axioma de constructibilidad (V=L) es falso. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar una demostración de cada uno de estos tres teoremas en el contexto de la teoría de modelos usando ideas del texto de Chang y Keisler (Model Theory). Tales demostraciones tienen en común el uso del método de construcción de modelos llamado ultraproductos, de lógicas infinitarias o fragmentos de la lógica de segundo orden, y del axioma de elección. We study several perfect set properties of the Baire space which follow from the Ramsey property ω→(ω) ω . In particular we present some independence results which complete the picture of how these perfect set properties relate to each other.

En este artículo realizamos una reconstrucción del Programa original de Hilbert antes del surgimiento de los teoremas limitativos de la tercera década del siglo pasado. Para tal reconstrucción empezaremos por mostrar lo que Torretti llama los primeros titubeos formales de Hilbert, es decir, la defensa por el método axiomático como enfoque fundamentante. Seguidamente, mostraremos como estos titubeos formales se establecen como un verdadero programa de investigación lógico-matemático y como dentro de dicho programa la inquietud por la decidibilidad de los problemas (...) matemáticos y en específico la decidibilidad de la Lógica de primer orden cobra peso. Luego pasamos a analizar como la inquietud por la decibilidad toma lugar dentro del pensamiento filosófico-matemático de Hilbert presentándose como uno de los grandes problemas a los cuales la metamatemática debe encontrar una solución, esto lo hacemos mostrando un contraste con autores, como John von Neumann y Roberto Torretti, quienes de alguna u otra manera no interpretan el problema de la decidibilidad de la Lógica de primer orden como un problema de peso dentro del programa original de Hilbert. Finalmente argumentamos que el resultado meta-teórico de Church puede entenderse como una refutación del optimismo intelectual que permea a todo el programa original de Hilbert. (shrink)

This article’s objetive is to present four application examples of Herbrand’s theorem to decide the validity of reasoning on first order language, in accordance whit Church’s Undecidability’s theorem. Also, to tell which is the principal problem around it. The logical resolution calculus will be worked on this article, which is a method used in artificial intelligence.

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar en un solo cuerpo tres maneras de relativizar (o generalizar) el concepto de conjunto constructible de Gödel que no suelen aparecer juntas en la literatura especializada y que son importantes en la Teoría de Conjuntos, por ejemplo para resolver problemas de consistencia o independencia. Presentamos algunos modelos resultantes de las diferentes formas de relativizar el concepto de constructibilidad, sus propiedades básicas y algunas formas débiles del Axioma de Elección válidas o no válidas en (...) ellas. The objective of this article is to present an original proof of the following theorem: Thereis a generic extension of the Solovay’s model L(R) where there is a linear order of P(N)/fin that extends to the partial order (P(N)/f in), ≤*). Linear orders of P(N)/fin are important because, among other reasons, they allow constructing non-measurable sets, moreover they are applied in Ramsey's Theory .

It has been claimed that naïve realism predicts phenomenological similarities where there are none and, thereby, mischaracterises the phenomenal character of perceptual experience. If true, this undercuts a key motivation for the view. Here, we defend naïve realism against this charge, proposing that such arguments fail (three times over). In so doing, we highlight a more general problem with critiques of naïve realism that target the purported phenomenological predictions of the view. The problem is: naïve realism, broadly construed, doesn’t make (...) phenomenological predictions of the required sort. So, as a result, opponents must resign themselves to attacking specific incarnations of naïve realism, or approach matters quite differently. (shrink)

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar dos tópicos de Lógica matemática y sus fundamentos: El primer tópico es una actualización de la demostración de Alonzo Church del Teorema de completitud de Gödel para la Lógica de primer orden, la cual aparece en su texto "Introduction to Mathematical Logic" (1956) y usa el procedimientos efectivos de Forma normal prenexa y Forma normal de Skolem; y el segundo tópico es una demostración de que la propiedad de partición (tipo Ramsey) del espacio (...) topológico de Baire llamada "Propiedad de partición polarizada" es falsa en el Modelo Básico de Cohen. En este trabajo matemático-filosófico se estudian cuatro tópicos de la Lógica matemática: El método de construcción de modelos llamado Ultraproductos, la Propiedad de Interpolación de Craig, las Álgebras booleanas y los Órdenes parciales separativos. El objetivo principal del mismo es analizar la importancia que tienen dichos tópicos para el estudio de los fundamentos de la matemática, desde el punto de vista del platonismo matemático. Para cumplir con tal objetivo se trabajará en el ámbito de la Matemática, de la Metamatemática y (...) de la Filosofía de la matemática. El desarrollo de la investigación arrojó como resultado que tales tópicos son muy importantes para el estudio de los fundamentos de la matemática, desde el punto de vista del platonismo matemático, y en el trabajo se explica detalladamente con abundantes ejemplos el porqué (al final de cada sección y al final del mismo). Es conocido que el método de forcing es una de las técnicas de construcción de modelos más importantes de la Teoría de conjuntos en la actualidad, siendo el mismo muy útil para investigar problemas de matemática y/o de fundamentos de la matemática. El destacado matemático Joan Bagaria afirma lo siguiente sobre el método de forcing en su artículo "Paul Cohen y la técnica del forcing" (Gaceta de la Real Sociedad Matemática Española, Vol. 2, Nº 3, 1999, págs 543-553) : "Aunque (...) Cohen recibió la medalla Fields por su demostración de la independencia de la hipótesis del continuo y del axioma de elección, su contribución va mucho más allá de estos problemas. Su nuevo método, el forcing, no sólo ha permitido resolver un sinfín de problemas importantes en prácticamente todas las áreas de las matemáticas, si no que ha cambiado para siempre nuestra concepción de la matemática como ciencia". El objetivo principal del siguiente trabajo es estudiar el método de forcing describiendo algunas de sus aplicaciones (forcing de Cohen, forcing aleatorio, forcing de Mathias, forcing de Sacks, forcing de Silver, etc.), y ofreciendo una aproximación a sus fundamentos metamatemáticos. Se aspira que estas notas sirvan de apoyo para aprender dicho método. (shrink)

Es conocido que el Teorema de Completitud de Gödel, el Teorema del Colapso Transitivo de Mostowski y el Principio de Reflexión son resultados muy útiles en las investigaciones de Lógica matemática y/o los Fundamentos de la matemática. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar algunas demostraciones clásicas de tales resultados: Dos del Teorema de Completitud de Gödel, una del Teorema del Colapso Transitivo de Mostowski y una del Principio de Reflexión. Se aspira que estas notas sean de utilidad para estudiar (...) dichas pruebas. Vale la pena resaltar que entre los métodos matemáticos que se utilizan en tales demostraciones se encuentran: (1) La técnica de construcción de modelos a partir de constantes (o "método del conjunto maximal consistente con un conjunto de testigos" de Henkin) y (2) el Principio de inducción matemática en varias versiones [ (2.1) Inducción matemática sobre los números naturales y (2.2) Inducción transfinita ((2.2.1) Inducción transfinita sobre conjuntos bien ordenados cualesquiera, por ejemplo sobre un cardinal infinito Alef_alfa, (2.2.2) Inducción transfinita sobre una clase de conjuntos bien ordenada, por ejemplo sobre la "clase de todos los ordinales, finitos o infinitos", y (2.2.3) Inducción transfinita sobre relaciones bien fundamentadas, por ejemplo sobre la "relación de pertenencia" entre conjuntos)]. La siguiente ponencia-taller tiene por finalidad explicar cómo podría aplicarse el Método de George Polya para resolver problemas (matemáticos) en el contexto de la Lógica Matemática, especialmente en la lógica Matemática elemental (la lógica de primer orden con identidad). Es una propuesta pedagógica experimental (además de las ya existentes) que tal vez pueda ser útil para la enseñanza de la lógica matemática en ciencias o en humanidades. Dicha ponencia se presentó (vía web) con motivo de la celebración del Día Mundial (...) de Lógica 2022 en dos ocasiones: En la Universidad Central de Venezuela (Venezuela) y en la Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (Logic & Analytics Group - La Paz y La Sociedad Científica de Filosofía de la UMSA, Bolivia). Transdisciplinary research knits together knowledge from diverse epistemic communities in addressing social-environmental challenges, such as biodiversity loss, climate crises, food insecurity, and public health. This paper reflects on the roles of philosophy of science in transdisciplinary research while focusing on Indigenous and other subaltern forms of knowledge. We offer a critical assessment of demarcationist approaches in philosophy of science and outline a constructive alternative of transdisciplinary philosophy of science. While a demarcationist focus obscures the complex relations between epistemic communities, transdisciplinary (...) philosophy of science provides resources for meeting epistemic and political challenges of collaborative knowledge production. My topic is two-fold: a reductive account of expertise as an epistemic phenomenon, and applying the reductive account to the question of whether or not philosophers enjoy expertise. I conclude, on the basis of the reductive account, that even though philosophers enjoy something akin to second-order expertise (i.e. they are often experts on the positions of other philosophers, current trends in the philosophical literature, the history of philosophy, conceptual analysis and so on), they nevertheless lack first-order philosophical expertise (i.e. expertise (...) on philosophical positions themselves such as the nature of mind, causality, normativity and so forth). When moral philosophers study ignorance, their efforts are almost exclusively confined to its exculpatory and blameworthy aspects. Unfortunately, though, this trend overlooks that certain kinds of propositional ignorance, namely of the personal costs and benefits of altruistic actions, can indirectly incentivize those actions. Humans require cooperation from others to survive, and that can be facilitated by a good reputation. One avenue to a good reputation is helping others, sticking to moral principles, and so forth, without calculating the personal costs of (...) doing so, e.g., saving someone from a burning building without calculating how personally costly or beneficial it would be. These actions are indirect moral benefits (partly) resulting from that kind of propositional ignorance. (shrink)

The Generalized Quantifiers Theory, I will argue, in the second half of last Century has led to an important rapprochement, relevant both in logic and in linguistics, between logical quantification theories and the semantic analysis of quantification in natural languages. In this paper I concisely illustrate the formal aspects and the theoretical implications of this rapprochement.

In this article I present the conception of syntax emerging from the “dynamic approach” to syntax and semantics, developed in the last few decades, moving from the critic to the static theories of language, either those developed in the Chomskian framework or those based on Montague’s grammar. I will suggest that this view can be fruitfully compared with Saussure’s position on syntax.

In this paper, I argue the practice of procreation is immoral regardless of the consequences of human presence such as climate change and overpopulation; the lack of consent, interests and moral desert on the part of nonexistent individuals means someone could potentially suffer in the absence of moral justification. Procreation is only morally justified if there is some method for acquiring informed consent from a non-existent person; but that is impossible; therefore, procreation is immoral.

If you’ve got millions of dollars to donate, don’t donate them to academic philosophy. Producing philosophical articles and books faces diminishing returns and diverts money and attention from more important causes. Many philosophy books and articles contradict each other; at best, only some can be correct. Philosophy classes are poor at instilling critical thinking skills. Resources that would be spent on philosophy would be better spent elsewhere.

This book is an introduction to first-order modal logic. It starts with classical propositional logic and ends with first-order modal logic. The text introduces the basic theory of sets, graphs and a chapter on argumentation from contemporary pragmatics.

Are strangers sincere in their moral praise and criticism? Here we apply signaling theory to argue ceteris paribus moral criticism is more likely sincere than praise; the former tends to be a higher-fidelity signal (in Western societies). To offer an example: emotions are often self-validating as a signal because they're hard to fake. This epistemic insight matters: moral praise and criticism influence moral reputations, and affect whether others will cooperate with us. Though much of this applies to generic praise and (...) criticism too, moral philosophers should value sincere moral praise and moral criticism for several reasons: it (i) offers insight into how others actually view us as moral agents; (ii) offers feedback to help us improve our moral characters; and (iii) encourages some behaviors, and discourages others. And so as moral agents, we should care whether moral praise and moral criticism is sincere. (shrink)

This article is focused on a correct use of the social network Twitter in political communication in order to be effective and create social active participation channels. Such use are related to the utility of the potential that social networks offer us as interactive channel; which eliminates the communication barrier between the citizen and the politician. Also it highlights the importance of Twitter as a new public space for communication, following the new “public sphere” where come not only citizens but (...) also the media to extract comments and opinions of politicians. While anthropogenic species extinctions can be considered morally problematic for a range of reasons, they can also be described as a problem of interspecies justice. That is the focus of this paper in which we argue that human-caused species extinctions can be integrated within a non-anthropocentric account of reparative justice that is significantly similar to how reparation is understood within political theory at large. An account such as this faces a series of difficulties, such as how to make right past (...) injustices against victims that do not exist any longer and which belonged to species now extinct. For that purpose, we offer an argument in favour of symbolic forms of reparation in the form of, amongst other things, the preservation and restoration of habitat to materially repair the interspecies justice relationship; as well as monuments and education to honour the nonhuman dead. Astrobiocentrism is a vision that places us in a scenario of confirmation of life in the universe, either as a second genesis or as an expansion of humanity in space. It manages to raise consistent arguments in relation to questions such as what would happen to knowledge if life were confirmed in the universe, how would this change the way we understand our place in the cosmos? Astrobiocentrism raises a series of reflections in the context of confirmed discovery, and it (...) develops concepts that work directly with what would happen after irrefutable evidence has been obtained that we are not alone in space. Unlike biocentrism or ecocentrism, the astrobiocentric view is not limited to the Earth-centric perspective, and for it incorporates a multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary understanding. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make a reflection on the astrobiocentric issues related to the challenges and problems of the discovery of life in the universe and the expansion of mankind into space. Here we explore some aspects of the transition from biogeocentrism to astrobiocentrism, astrobiosemiotics, homo mensura, moral community, planetary sustainability and astrotheology. (shrink)

Students sometimes profess moral relativism or skepticism with retorts like ‘how can we know?’ or ‘it’s all relative!’ Here I defend a pedagogical method to defuse moral relativism and moral skepticism using phenomenal conservatism: if it seems to S that p, S has defeasible justification to believe that p; e.g., moral seemings, like perceptual ones, are defeasibly justified. The purpose of defusing moral skepticism and relativism is to prevent these metaethical views from acting as stumbling blocks to insightful ethical inquiry (...) in the classroom. This approach puts the burden of proof on the relativist or skeptic (to justify their view, contrary to appearances), and makes their views costlier: if we reject moral seemings as a kind, we must reject other less objectionable seemings too (e.g. intellectual seemings). Finally, this approach improves learning outcomes by ‘hooking onto’ student familiarity with seemings, e.g. seeing is (defeasibly justified) believing. (shrink)

Desde la formulación geométrica de la gravedad, según la ecuaciones de Einstein-Grosmann-Hilbert, de noviembre de 1915, como el movimiento geodésico en la variedad semirimenniana de curvatura positiva, espaciotiempo, donde por ausencias de simetrías, no es posible la conservación de la energía-impulso tomando en conjunto los procesos materiales y el del campo geométrico gravitacional, sin embargo, dadas esas simetrías en el espaciotiempo plano de Minkowski, usando el modelo de De Sitter, Einstein linealizando la gravitación, por supuesto, realmente en ausencia de gravedad, (...) en 1916, depuradas de algunos errores matemáticos en 1918, introdujó las "ondas gravitacionales" como perturbaciones en la curvatura del espacio, y en ausencia de saber físicamente qué es el espaciotiempo y filosoficamente en pleito, que previamente en 1936 y definitivamente en 1937, Einstein demostró no existían. Fue por parte de los trabajos surgidos de la dinámica del discurrir académico, desde la perspectiva no de Einstein sino de Weyl, que Bondi, Pirani, Robinson y Trautman, en la década de 1950, posterior al fallecimiento de Einstein, las "ondas gravitacionales" fueron reintroducidas y motivaron que experimentalmente se buscaran. En el 2002, a partir del experimento de VLBI de Sergei Kopeikin fue establecida su supuesta velocidad, sin que obtuviera el reconocimiento unánime de la comunidad de científicos sino diviéndolos. Y fue en febrero de 2016, que la colaboración aLIGO-aVirgo anunciaran haberlas detectado por primera vez. En este trabajo se presenta la historia que conllevo a este supuesto descubrimiento y se plantea que las ondas detectadas son realmente del vacío cuántico en el cual está inmerso todo lo existente, tésis del autor expuesta inmediatamente como respuesta a ese anunció de 2016. From the geometric formulation of gravity, according to the Einstein-Grosmann-Hilbert equations, of November 1915, as the geodesic movement in the semirimennian manifold of positive curvature, spacetime, where due to absence of symmetries, the conservation of energy-impulse is not possible taking together the material processes and that of the gravitational geometric field, however, given those symmetries in the flat Minkowski spacetime, using the De Sitter model, Einstein linearizing gravitation, of course, really in the absence of gravity, in 1916, purged of some (...) mathematical errors in 1918, he introduced "gravitational waves" as disturbances in the curvature of space, and in the absence of knowing physically what spacetime is and philosophically in dispute, that previously in 1936 and definitively in 1937, Einstein showed they did not exist. It was through the works arising from the dynamics of academic discourse, from the perspective not of Einstein but of Weyl, that Bondi, Pirani, Robinson and Trautman, in the 1950s, after Einstein's death, "gravitational waves" were reintroduced and led to experimental search. In 2002, from Sergei Kopeikin's VLBI experiment, its supposed speed was established, without obtaining unanimous recognition from the community of scientists but rather dividing them. And it was in February 2016 that the aLIGO-aVirgo collaboration announced that they had detected them for the first time. In this work, the history that led to this supposed discovery is presented and it is stated that the waves detected are really from the quantum vacuum in which everything that exists is immersed, the author's thesis exposed immediately in response to that 2016 announcement. Einstein structured the theoretical frame of his work on gravity under the Special Relativity and Minkowski´s spacetime using three guide principles: The strong principle of equivalence establishes that acceleration and gravity are equivalents. Mach´s principle explains the inertia of the bodies and particles as completely determined by the total mass existent in the universe. And, general covariance searches to extend the principle of relativity from inertial motion to accelerated motion. Mach´s principle was abandoned quickly, general covariance resulted mathematical property of (...) the tensors and principle of equivalence inconsistent and it can only apply to punctual gravity, no to extended gravity. Also, the basic principle of Special Relativity, i.e., the constancy of the speed of the electromagnetic wave in the vacuum was abandoned, static Minkowski´s spacetime was replaced to dynamic Lorentz´s manifold and the main conceptual fundament of the theory, i.e. spacetime is not known what is. Of other hand, gravity never was conceptually defined; neither answers what is the law of gravity in general. However, the predictions arise of Einstein equations are rigorously exacts. Thus, the conclusion is that on gravity, it has only the equations. In this work it shows that principle of equivalence applies really to punctual and extended gravity, gravity is defined as effect of change of coordinates although in the case of the extended gravity with change of geometry from Minkowski´s spacetime to Lorentz´s manifold; and the gravitational motion is the geodesic motion that well it can declare as the general law of gravity. It presents the basics of the “Relativistic theory of gravitation”, with the inclusion of original texts, from various papers, published between 1987 and 2009, by theirs authors: S. S Gershtein, A. A. Logunov, Yu. M. Loskutov and M. A. Mestvirishvili, additionally, together with the introductions, summaries and conclusions of the author of this paper. The “Relativistic theory of gravitation” is a gauge theory, compatible with the theories of quantum physics of the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces, which defines gravity as (...) the fourth force existing in nature, as a static field equipped with the transmitter particles of the virtual gravitons of spins 2 and 0, within the spirit of Galilei's principle of relativity, in his generalization of Poincaré's Special Relativity that allowed the authors to universalize that the physical laws of nature are complied with regardless of the frames of reference where they apply, integrated into the Grossmann-Einstein Entwurf theory, in its further development, by those authors, therefore, this theory preserves the conservation laws of energy-impulse and angular impulse of the gravitational field jointly to the other material fields existing in nature, in the Riemann's effective spacetime, through its identity with Minkowski's pseudo Euclidean spacetime. Based on the Russian school of Logunov and others, with the contribution of Tom van Flandern, and his previous works on space-time, gravitational waves and speed of the gravity, the author discusses the theory of the time-space fluid that results from the supposed gravitational waves that would have detected LIGO, and reaffirms the space-time as a structural geometric property of the dynamic matter (radiation, matter and quantum vacuum), now with the strong argument that without escape, in an unnatural way, the (...) physicists and philosophers of science confer the conception of the author to that ridiculous material-space-time, while depriving Matter, of the intrinsic space-time. In addition, he warns about the conceptual contradiction existing between NASA and Caltech over gravitational waves, being absurd the concept of Caltech, operator of LIGO, since gravitational waves would propagate in five non-detectable dimensions. NASA valiant and validly recognizes that they would be waves of space; therefore, there are no space-time waves that correspond to gravitational waves that, according to the great current of relativistic physicists, would exist. Finally, the author reaffirms that the quadrupole waves detected by LIGO are waves of the quantum vacuum. (shrink)

In this paper we present a new framework of idealization in biology. We characterize idealizations as a network of counterfactual and hypothetical conditionals that can exhibit different “degrees of contingency”. We use this idea to say that, in departing more or less from the actual world, idealizations can serve numerous epistemic, methodological or heuristic purposes within scientific research. We defend that, in part, this structure explains why idealizations, despite being deformations of reality, are so successful in scientific practice. En este ensayo el autor supera la contradicción teórica existente entre la Relatividad General que define el campo gravitacional como un aspecto geométrico del espaciotiempo, bien como potencial o curvatura, y la Gravedad Cuántica que lo define como una fuerza de interacción fundamental, con el cambio de la concepción del espaciotiempo de propiedad geométrica estructural del campo gravitacional, a la concepción del espaciotiempo propiedad geométrica estructural de la materia en movimiento. El espaciotiempo no es continente de la materia (Substancialismo) sino (...) que por el contrario está contenido en la materia en cuanto constituye la estructura geométrica que le da su forma y permite sus cambios, a la cual como espacio le confiere su capacidad de contener y como tiempo su capacidad de devenir. Tampoco, el espaciotiempo es la categoría de las relaciones geométricas de los cuerpos materiales y sus eventos (Relacionismo), puesto que, no es una propiedad relacional de la materia sino la propiedad estructural espacio-temporal geométrica de la materia, a la cual la dota con sus capacidades de auto contenerse y transformarse. La teoría del autor sobre el espaciotiempo es la de la materia intrínsecamente dinámica, dotada estructuralmente de las cuatro dimensiones de espaciotiempo, autocontenida espacialmente y auto deviniendo temporalmente, puesto, que la materia en su capacidad de contener dinámicamente ésta ensimisma contenida y transformándose. La partícula-onda, de la materia y del campo, no existe en el espaciotiempo, sino que éste es la propiedad geométrica intrínseca estructural de la partícula-onda, por lo tanto, adherida a su propia naturaleza interna, como su propiedad geométrica dimensional intrínseca, que con fuerza de ley se manifiesta en sus mediciones cuantitativas, bien cuando es tomada la partícula-onda en sí o en relación con otras. Así, sólo son posibles las teorías sobre la gravedad provenientes de la Gravedad Cuántica, aunque, deben reformularse renunciando a integrarlas con la visión geométrica derivada de las ecuaciones de la llamada “General Relatividad”.
